Limit party of 4.What to bring: Picnic lunch or plans to eat at a restaurant in the park (no reservation needed), hat, light jacket, sun screen, sturdy shoes capable of a moderate, level but HOT 4-6 mile round trip hike to the lava. We provide umbrellas, light rain gear, walking stick, bottled water.

Your Guide Bret Yager is a reporter for both Big Island daily newspapers, writing about flowing lava, shark attacks and hurricanes. He spent a decade as a commercial crab fisherman, hiked in the Himalayas and has even flown through a Central Pacific hurricane with the Air Force Reserve “Hurricane Hunters!” Bret is a commercial passenger vehicle driver licensed to federal standards, so you know you are in good hands on the road.

Total Tour Time, 13 hours.

Our Day: Depart Kona 10 a.m., travel south through the coffee belt and lava fields of South Kona and Ka’u.

–Stop at Henry Greenwell Farm, originator of the famed Kona Coffe brand. Tour and coffee tasting. Restrooms.

–Stop at Punaluu Bake Shop in Naalehu at 10 a.m. Grab a snack of their famous sweet bread. Restrooms.

— Arrive at 1:30 p.m. at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Take an hour to either have lunch at Volcano House on the Crater Rim or do your own exploring around the rim and visitor center. After lunch, we will visit Jaggar Museum and overlook with views into Halemaumau Crater.

— Drive Chain of Craters Road to the access point for the 61G flow, the latest live lava flow, pouring down to the sea, exploding in an awesome natural fireworks display! This is best enjoyed in the evening, when the sun begins to set and viewing becomes fabulous! Equipped with flashlights, we return to our vehicle along a level gravel roadway. Return to Kona around 11 p.m.

Fully licensed and insured. NOTE: Hiking to see flowing lava is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, not to be missed, and your guide helps you navigate the pitfalls. That said, this hike is for the physically fit, those with good balance and fit heart and lungs. Sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano and lava can irritate the lungs. Participants required to sign an activity waiver. Those in doubt should ask their doctor.
